What I Write About

I have been encouraged in my writing since I was a kid in Ohio in elementary school. I was lucky: in 4th grade I wrote a story for class about a small man who saved his village from a giant rock, which my teacher loved, and I continued to do well in school and in writing. Soon I got into Isaac Asimov, other sci-fi, Stephen King, and Tolkien. I wanted to be a writer like Asimov. I wrote horror fiction like King and Poe and started keeping a journal in high school. Then I started to read literary stuff like Salinger and Dante. My poetry and books have been compared to the beats, Kerouac, and Hunter S. Thompson. I love reading philosophy, James Joyce, Samuel Beckett, Kafka and Paul Bowles. I strive to write with the direct simplicity of Kafka and Bowles, but I think we all find our own voice.

Here on Medium and other blogs I write about my life, writing, parenting, dating, and Buddhism which I started to practice as a teenager. One of the most important things we can do as men, specifically, is to treat women with respect. I was on this path before I had a daughter and it’s truly critical now for men to step up as well as to fight racism and the overall lack of education and critical thinking in this country and the world.

I hope you like my writing and take a look at my books and art at www.charleskeatts.com. I have more art on Instagram and have my books on Amazon and Lulu.com.
